December 7th saw the worldwide release of the second Finchey album Rum & Chess. Here's a quick chat with Robbie about the record:
How long have you been working on Rum & Chess?
"Since around 2015 when I released Murmurations on the same day I went into hospital for open heart surgery.. I naturally took a bit of a break but had a few ideas that I came up with from the hospital bed! Eventually over the course of a year wrote around 17 - 20 songs - It was originally intended as a double album but then decided to concentrate on a single record"
What's your favourite track on the album?
"I think it would have to be My Third Eye. I was listening to Animals by Pink Floyd a lot and Dave and I really hit the mark with the sound that I wanted to achieve with my own 'Finchey' blend"
Why Rum & Chess?
"Christmas 2015, my girlfriend and I drank a lot of rum and played a lot of chess! Thought the two words went well together and I think it sums up the journey and feel of the album"
What's the story with the cover art?
"My brother Matthew Burley is an artist and this is a painting of a long exposure photograph taken in Bangkok. Loved it so much that I wanted to use it as an album cover!"
